Born in 1945 in Kolkata, Gour Kanjilal had his initial years in Kolkata but had most of his primary education and higher studies in Delhi and Overseas.
He had his schooling at Raisina Bengali Higher Secondary School, Reading Road, New Delhi and Ramjas College, University of Delhi. He was recognized as "All Rounder" for
his keen interest in education, sports, politics, and leadership qualities by the school, college and social organizations he represented.
He had his M.A. (Hons) in History from Delhi University and tourism Management from Paris. He had also attended number of tourism related
workshops/seminars in UK, France, Jordan, Syria and Turkey in course of his overseas postings.
He is tourism professional excellence with 37 years experience in tourism related activities. He started his career as a temporary usher at UNCTAD in
1967 which gave him the motivation to look for a job in tourism where he could meet and interact with people specially with foreigners. As luck would have favored
him, he got selected for a job in the Department of Tourism, Govt. of India as Tourist Information Officer in 1968 and started his career as Information
Officer in the Govt. of India, Regional Tourist Office, Kolkata. Since then and till the date of superannuation in June 2005, he had served
in the Ministry of Tourism in different capacities and at different locations in India and aboard. He held the post of Regional Director (West)
based in Mumbai prior to his retirement. Earlier positions include Regional Director, Gulf - Middle East & Africa), Regional Director (North),
Director, Indiatourism, Paris, Assistant Director, India tourism, London, Deputy Director, Indian Institute of Tourism & Travel Management/National Institute of
Water Sports, Principal, Indian Institute of Skiing and Mountaineering, New Delhi.
In addition to tourism qualifications gained in France and England, Kanjilal has also completed specialized courses offered by the World Tourism Organisation and PATA.
His literary achievements include series of articles in reputed travel journals as well as the national Press in India and abroad. He is also a visiting faculty member
in various tourism and training institutions. Mr. Kanjilal has visited more than 65 countries all over the world and thus has immense on hand experience. He has also
held tourism assignments in Kolkata, New Delhi, Goa and Mumbai leaving behind an indelible impression of excellent PR due primarily to his proactive interaction with
tourism partners. At present, he is holding the post of Executive Director with the National Apex Body of Tour Operators namely Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO)
and consultant to many educational institutes, tour agencies and Media services. He speaks five Indian languages and speaks French and Japanese, quite fluently. With
recipient of various awards from international trade bodies in London, Paris, Dubai, Bahrain, Johannesburg, Nairobi and organization in India, he is the real man for tourism.
He has authored two books about tourism.
